Herbert West-Reanimator III. Six Shots by Midnight

"We had fair luck with specimens in Bolton—much better than in Arkham. We had not been settled a week before we got an accident victim on the very night of burial, and made it open its eyes with an amazingly rational expression before the solution failed."

In which our heroes, having successfully graduated from the Miskatonic medical school, set up a practice in the town of Bolton. Of course, tending to the medical needs of the small community isn't all they get up to...

"Herbert West-Reanimator" was written between October 1921 and June 1922. It was serialized and published in six parts in the amateur publication Home Brew between February and July of 1922. This format required Lovecraft to begin each installment with a recap of the action so far and end in a cliffhanger. A device rarely used in Lovecraft's work.

The title is misleading. The "six shots" come well after midnight.
